Leaving Haiti…

Okay, I miss my wife & children a whole lot, and I’m ready to be home…but I’m not ready to leave.

As the plane left the ground in Haiti this morning my first thought was “when can I return?”

I think all the words that need to be said about this trip have been said by people far more qualified to do so.  It’s been an honor to be here with these incredible writers that include (I’ve added all of them to my list of heroes):

Jen Hatmaker, Sarah Bessey, Duane Scott, Dan King, Deidra Riggs, Kristen HowertonJennie Allen & Mary DeMuth.

Please grab a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) and spend some time with their posts from this week.  You will laugh, cry, feel despair and see an eternal hope that covers all.

I also think you can now consider this the “backstory” because there are some incredible mountains that are about to move.

The entire trip was incredible & I have a thousand highlights; however, there are two very personal stories that quietly took place.

I was able to meet Achelo who is the boy my family sponsors through Help One Now here in Haiti via Pastor Gaétan Alcégaire.  I walked through the gate & immediately a small hand was placed in mine.

I don’t know how he even knew who I was, but he found me.

He found me.

No words.

I also had the privilege of meeting Jacob & Emily Kaler’s son they are in the process of adopting.  There are no words to describe how much this family means to me, so this opportunity to meet him on his 5th birthday must have been set in the heavens.

I couldn’t be more impressed & more proud of the Help One Now team lead by Chris Marlow, Jacob Vanhorn, Lamar Stockton, & Jen Allred (we all know Lamar & Jen make it all happen).

It’s one thing to hear about their work on the ground, it’s another thing to hear it through the words of the Haitian leaders they are serving.

Huge respect for the creative talents of Scott Wade, Mollie Donovan Burpo & Kris Rutherford.  They captured much more than the beauty of this place.  They captured its soul.  It is through their talents, Haiti comes alive to everyone who has followed out trip.

A personal thank you to Josh and Kristin Copher for making it possible for me to be on this trip.  The Pure Charity team is incredible and great to be with Bret Raymond during this time.  Truly appreciate the team that stayed behind to continue to empower the work of organizations serving like this all over the world.  They are also incredible!

The biggest thank you…

My incredible wife, Corrie, is the hero of this trip for me.

I know she has worked harder this week than I have to make sure life continues, as it should with four children, a small business creating jobs in places like Haiti, the endless loads of laundry, a dead car battery, a house for sale, and a billion other things that must be attended to.

I’m here in Haiti because of her strength.  She served the people of Haiti in a big way this week & I am grateful.
